Networking Blues
I'll admit that I use to dread networking functions because I felt that I always had to say something exciting about myself. I have since learned that networking is really about getting to know the other person and then making a connection. Often, we put so much pressure on ourselves to be on point and present ourselves as "someone you need to know". However, when we overlook one important step in networking, we miss out on opportunities to meet really great people.
Sure there are books, seminars, and coaching on networking, but the real key is to be a good listener and to ask the right questions. Ask a person to tell you more about themselves and they will give you all the information you need. Be attentive and listen for clues on how you can either help them or work with them. Sometimes when people are talking, we are so busy thinking about what we're going to say in response, that we don't really hear what they are saying. Ask pertinent questions to show your interest. Don't dismiss them by looking around the room for a more exciting person to talk to.
If someone asks you about yourself, stick to facts and accomplishments. Be real, you don't have to put on airs to impress anyone. Just let people know who you are and what you can do for them.
Don't give up on networking events! You can take charge of the situation by being authentic and being an attentive listener.
